Election 2025

Mobilizing for the Canada We Want

SCAN! has launched its federal election campaign.  With just over a month to bring the climate crisis into the debate, we have created materials to support the work being carried out by our chapters.

The statement below, “Mobilizing for the Canada We Want,” is the basis of our messaging during the campaign and is available as a PDF. All of our materials reflect this messaging.

If you attend an all-candidates’ meeting, the questions and leaflets will be useful.  If you attend a rally, the leaflets can also be distributed there.

Elbows up!

Mobilizing for the Canada We Want

Recognizing the True Canada We Want

As we join the fight for sovereignty, our advocacy for the Canada We Want has to recognize that Indigenous nations have inherent sovereign rights and are equal partners in our endeavour. Canada is a multi-national country that must also respect the rights of Quebec and francophone populations.

The Canada We Want supports immigrant rights and appreciates that immigrants contribute to all the positive aspects of Canada. It includes programs that support racialized and LGBTQ+ communities.

The World is in Unprecedented Turmoil – Canada is being attacked: We need to join the fight to protect Canadian Sovereignty

The United States, the most powerful country in the world, is today run by a radically anti-climate, anti-democratic government, that is also openly musing about taking over other countries, such as Greenland, Panama, and Canada.

Trump’s objective is to make Canada the 51st state. This is not a joke.

We have to join with others to defend Canadian sovereignty at the same time as we advocate for the Canada We Want. Defending our sovereignty is fundamental to creating the Canada We Want.

Trump is going all out to eliminate all mention of, and all actions related to, the climate crisis.  He has withdrawn the US from the Paris agreement to limit global warming to 1.5C.  He has purged all government websites of any reference to climate change. He is pushing for more and more oil and gas production and is attacking nature with his ”Drill, baby, Drill” mania.

This is a threat to our future and the future of the world.

Supporting Climate Action is fundamental to the Canada We Want.

The Canada We Want

Trump is for accelerating the climate crisis.  We are for a sustainable society.

  • We want to decarbonize our society and restore our connection to nature.
  • We want to transform our economy to one that relies on electrical power across the country, not on oil and gas pipelines.
  • We need public transportation, not more highways.
  • We need conservation and reuse of materials, not massive expansion of mining.
  • We have to develop a green infrastructure independent from the US economy.

“We need government regulation, planning, and financing to an extent that we haven’t seen since the Second World War.  That will likely mean exerting control over certain sectors of the economy, creating special crown corporations, and/or imposing strict guidelines as was done in the war effort. Government resources and priorities, government revenues and spending, government policy and programs need to be laser -focused on the climate emergency” (SCAN! Platform)

These measures can be financed by moving wealth from the few to the many. We need to implement special taxes on excess wealth and profits.

All workers affected by decarbonizing the economy must be guaranteed training, jobs, and income as we invest in green infrastructure, new housing, retrofitting, health care, education and more.

We need a Just Transition to a sustainable economy.

Trump promotes attacks on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.  We promote human rights for everyone.

As stated above, central to a sustainable, caring and equitable society in Canada is recognizing Indigenous rights and sovereignty. Governments must provide financial and political support to Indigenous initiatives to control their own economies.

Trump is for increased militarization.  Trump has no respect for the territorial integrity of other countries.

We must encourage and support all attempts at peacefully resolving international conflict.

We oppose increased military spending and call for “the Department of National Defence to shift its program priorities to better prepare for, and implement, the ongoing aid to civil authorities and adaptation efforts that we know will grow in the climate emergency” (SCAN! Platform.)

The Federal Election: the Stakes are High

There is talk about pairing oil and gas development with renewable energy development and nuclear power. This is not a solution to the climate crisis. It will intensify the crisis.

We will make every effort to bring attention to climate solutions as integral to the defense of our sovereignty.

Poilievre stands for:

  • Climate emergency denial and more oil and gas production
  • Tax relief for the wealthy
  • Increased privatization and reduction of public services
  • Attacks on Indigenous rights, immigrants, and so-called “woke” and “cancel” culture which is code for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Pierre Poilievre has been endorsed by Elon Musk.

The key issue in this election will be how to respond to Trump’s trade war and attack on our sovereignty.

How can someone who believes in what Trump is promoting protect us from Trump?

Another key issue in the election will be the cost-of-living crisis.

Aggravating the climate crisis exacerbates the cost of living: increased insurance rates, increased food costs because of destruction of farmland, increased energy costs as oil and gas are more expensive than renewables. The climate crisis is not only bad for your health, but also for your pocketbook.

Exclusive reliance on the market and private enterprise creates a society where money goes from the many to the few – and inflation rises.

Only the fight for a sustainable, equitable, and caring society will protect us from Trump and ensure a future for our country. The fight for the Canada We Want is also a fight for the future of all humanity.

The arena for the current fight is the federal election. And we will do everything possible to highlight these issues.
