Why has the Canadian government failed to take serious steps to reduce carbon emissions despite the compelling evidence that our climate is on the verge of breakdown?
According to former Alberta politician Kevin Taft, the answer is that the fossil fuel industry has captured most of the democratic institutions in Alberta: which is carbon central for Canada’s emissions.
Kevin Taft was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta with the Alberta Liberal Party from 2001 to 2012, and leader of the Opposition from 2004 to 2008. He has written four best-selling books including Oil’s Deep State: How the petroleum industry undermines democracy and stops action on global warming. He lives in Edmonton.
