Our Pensions and Fossil Fuel investments? SCAN! says No!
Most of us have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan all our working lives. CPP is the largest pension fund in Canada. CPP continues to invest billions to fund fossil fuel companies, pipelines, and fossil fuel infrastructure. That is not how we want our money spent.
In fact, the Canada Pension Plan (through CPPInvestments, the investment arm of CPP) is abetting the climate emergency. How? Greenwashing, lack of transparency, board members with current or past ties to the fossil fuel companies, a lack of interim targets and now investment in LNG terminals and pipelines.
CPP is mandated to invest our money “without undue risk” to our pensions but as much of the world turns towards renewables, CPP continues to invest in fossil fuels. This increases the financial risks to our pensions.
What has the Pension Divestment Working Group (PDWG) done?
In 2022, the PDWG began a letter writing campaign to the CEO of CPPInvestments. In the last few years, we produced, in collaboration with SHIFT, 5000 postcards addressed to CPP executives calling them out on their record. These were distributed to SCAN! members, community organizations, environmental groups and individuals. Members of our working group attended public CPP community consultations to press the need to divest. We have also produced several informational brochures on CPP that are used for community tabling opportunities and environmental events.
